Deadly 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Italy

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Central Italy early Wednesday in the mountainous region of the country.  The quake has devastated towns in the region and left at least 38 dead.  The quake hit the region just before 4 a.m. and could be felt as far away as Greece.  There have also been aftershocks rocking the region with some being as high a 5.1.  The search for survivors continues today as many are still missing.  This quake was the 21st strongest quake to hit Italy ever and was the first earthquake since a 5.8 magnitude quake hit near Medolla in 2012.  The quake that struck near Norcia on Wednesday was in the same region as a 6.7 magnitude quake that struck in 1703.  The quake in 1703 has been estimated to have caused between 6,000 and 9,000 fatalities. Our prayers go out to the families affected by the earthquake.
